I am always surprised by the end result when I make a collage. The process is like creating a dream that I’m not fully aware of, and then, when I deem the image finished it has a familiar yet unknowable quality to it. As I cut pictures (pictures that simply appeal to me, nothing more) from magazines I have no idea where I shall finally place them; it is a process of discovery – what feels right. The joy is in the uncertainty; an owl’s head on a woman’s body, a kingfisher taking flight, a teapot, an outstretched arm – a narrative from my sub-conscious mind? Perhaps.
