There are times when I forget about art. Life and its unpredictable ways take over for a while and then, all of a sudden, I remember the cherries.

Still Life With Cherries, Strawberries & Gooseberries is a painting housed in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California close to where I used to live. Frequenting the museum often I must have walked past the painting a number of times before the cherries drew me in. I still remember, several years later, the day I discovered them and the joy I felt at their plumpness, piled high on the plate, one gently resting upon another, their stems pointing up declaring their presence.

I’ve come to realize that the cherries act as a sort of meditation, they still me and bring me to the moment. I love to just look at them and let my eye follow their contours – it makes me happy.

This extraordinarily beautiful painting was painted by Louise Moillon in 1630 when she was twenty years old. What a gift she left behind for us to enjoy.
